Title
Periodontal-Endodontic interrelationships
Summary
Clinical management of
periodontal-endodontic lesions presents considerable challenge to the
clinician. The pathways of communication for the spread of bacteria between
pulpal and periodontal tissues have been discussed with controversy. Etiologic
factors such as bacteria and fungi, dental malformations, as well as iatrogenic
errors play an important role in the development of such lesions.
Correct diagnosis of each specific condition
is of utmost importance for the proper treatment selection. This presentation
describes the interrelationship between
endodontic
and periodontal diseases, the biological and clinical evidence for diagnosis
and decision-making in the treatment of these conditions, as well as certain
considerations in the surgical management of these combined lesions.
At
conclusion, participants should be able to:
- discuss the inflammatory interactions
between pulp and periodontium
- decide on the proper diagnosis and
the best treatment option for each perioendo lesion
- evaluate the prognosis for each
specific periodontal-endodontic lesion
