ΤHESSALONIKI, A SOPHISTICATED PLACE
Thessaloniki, also known
as Salonica, is the second largest city in Greece. Its honorific title is
Symprotevousa, literally "co-capital", a reference to its historical status
throughout the ages.
Thessaloniki is a major economic,
commercial, industrial and political center and a major transportation hub for
the southeastern Europe. The city is a
cultural heritage and home to numerous archaeological sites, magnificent
Byzantine monuments, contemporary art galleries and libraries. In the city
center there is the University with an extensive campus.
The broad streets stretch up
to the slopes of Mount Hortiatis, overlooking the Thermaic Gulf.
Of greater interest are the old city walls, the Byzantine and ancient
monuments. The symbol of the city is the White
Tower, while other interesting sites
to visit are the Arch of the Roman Emperor Galerius, also known as Camara, the
Agios Georgios Rotonda with its famous mosaics and the church of Agios Dimitrios,
a basilica decorated with fine mosaics and marble columns. The Archaeological Museum
houses a superb collection of treasures from the royal tombs of Philip II and
the Byzantine Museum has splendid frescoes and icons.
Pleasant short visits
can be made to Thessaloniki
suburbs such as Panorama, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Karabournaki. In
these places there are a lot of stylish restaurants and taverns which serve, in
restful premises, local dishes and tasty "mezes".
The
nightlife of Thessaloniki is known all over Greece!
There are many bars, clubs, music halls and places for every taste and age. The
city center along the waterfront is the meeting point for young people and for
all city residents and visitors.
We
hope that you will have time to explore and enjoy many things in Thessaloniki!
