Title

Dental trauma: luxations & avulsions

This session will provide an update on luxation and avulsion injuries of the permanent dentition in children.  The classification, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and long term management will be discussed with examples of clinical cases.  Splinting techniques for these traumatic injuries will be reviewed.  The management of the young immature permanent incisor in relation to these types of traumatic injuries will be highlighted.  This will include endodontic treatment for the traumatized permanent incisors in a growing child. The talk will discuss vital techniques known as apexogenesis, which would enable traumatized young incisors to have continued root development and apical closure through normal physiological mechanisms. In cases where the vitality of the pulp cannot be preserved, non-vital techniques have to be used. The role of calcium hydroxide in apexification will be discussed in light of new developments such as the use of Mineral Tri-Oxide Aggregate. The management of root resorption will also be discussed as part of this lecture. New initiatives such as the use of MTA and Emdogain have been used to prolong the life of such teeth. Premolar transplantation and its role for replacement of missing incisors in children will also be discussed.
