Title

Molar incisor hypomineralisations - geting inside tooth structure

Enamel has attracted considerable interest from both material scientists and clinical practitioners. Dental enamel is the hardest and one of the most durable load-bearing tissues of the body, with a complex hierarchical structure. Any disturbance that results in enamel structure change can influence dental function in many ways.

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental disturbance of enamel affecting the first permanent molars and permanent incisors. Severely affected molars are extremely hypersensitive, prone to rapid caries development and can be difficult to manage in young patients. The challenges for clinicians include behavioral management, adequate anesthesia, suitable cavity design and choice of restorative materials. Patients experience pain and sensitivity even when the enamel is intact, as well as pain during brushing. Additionally, esthetical issue related to the appearance of incisor teeth is not uncommon.

Many studies were conducted with the aim to achieve better understanding of clinical appearance and treatment problems related to this condition.  Mechanical, histological, biochemical and morphological properties, microstructure as well as mineral concentration of hypomineralised first permanent molars were investigated.

The lecture will present used and available techniques in investigating tooth structure and MIH treatment recommendations based on these findings.
