Implant supported fixed restorations - treatment planning, clinical assessment, results

One of the major goals of dental implantology is to provide additional abutments for prosthetic rehabilitation of partially and completely edentulous patients with fixed restorations. Dental implants could be used to support the prostheses independently or in combination with natural teeth. Preoperative implant treatment planning is based on the data from the medical history of the patient and the precise analysis of indications and contraindications for implant rehabilitation. The planning is based on clearly defined guidelines and principles, generally accepted by the world community of implantologists.

          The author offers a review of several themes of present interest in the field of dental implantology, concerning treatment planning and prosthetic principles - restorative-driven approach for implant placement, hard and soft tissue preservation; some specific guidelines and principles for prosthetic treatment with bridge restorations; fixing of impant constructions to the abutments - screw-retained or cement-retained; emergence profile esthetics and implant treatment planning in the anterior maxilla; the influence of implant-abutment connection on soft tissue on the esthetic and functional properties of the prosthetic restoration, etc.

Along with the generally accepted principles for treatment of patients using endosseous dental implants, the author presents his own experience and analysis of long-term clinical results with implant supported fixed bridge restorations. The theoretical concepts and practical approaches are illustrated with photos from the author's personal clinical experience.
